As of the 26th of August Nitter has been effectively shut down. They have received a cease and desist from »X«, which is a real fucking shame. At the same time Reddit has earlier this month made it impossible to browse old.reddit.com without being logged in. It is extremely annoying, especially when you are on another computer (e.g. work) and don't want to log in. Even that, logging in nowadays is a multi-step process with passwords, email, phone number verification just to enjoy some posting. I see it as a general trend of "walled gardens". No access for outsiders, no access with tracking. No access if we can not measure the user in our KPIs. »Enshittification will continue until morale improves«.
